Battles filled with artillery cannons and Broadswords, the American Revolution was fiercely fought in North and South Carolina.
[00:00:00] What's she gonna do, brother, when Jeff Townsend Media runs wild on you?
[00:00:07] America Stories of the old George Washington. He seems to be, he's set the bar so far. He's the star of the other everyone. Is there any surprise to that really though that George Washington is the most downloaded one? Not at all. No. I mean, Jack, you even called him the Alan Jackson of the Revolution at War, which is so much. before the fall of Boston. Boston still under siege at this point, but Clinton and his men had left already. And they were heading south to North Carolina
[00:03:00] and then they end up in South Carolina.
[00:03:02] But originally their plan was to go to North Carolina
[00:03:04] and their hope was that they general and stuff like that. He was one of a five. So he was given command of the continental army that was raised in February 15th and he was tasked with protecting North Carolina from any attacks. The loyalists in South Carolina were led by a general named Donald
[00:04:21] McDonald, which I really misread that at first.
[00:04:25] But no, that's really yeah, the Donald McDonald sandwich. Every day or that McDonald's issue that I'm warning to James Moore in North Carolina,
[00:05:40] tell him you should surrender because, you know, the brochure going to be joining us
[00:05:45] and we're going to roll over you.
[00:06:46] So anyway, McDonald did order a double time march to make it to that bridge.
[00:06:48] He wanted to make it there. They say that again.
[00:06:49] We say that again, please.
[00:06:51] McDonald ordered a double time march to make it there as fast as possible.
[00:06:58] The downside to this was to start sneaking up, see if they can see anyone, and a secret continental army sentry could see them and he fired his gun in the air to let everyone else know that they're the
[00:09:25] all of the people that Moore had sent down there, unloaded on them. They fired the cannons with a great shot.
[00:09:28] They fired.
[00:09:29] So they're just running at them.
[00:09:31] They're all, they're just charging them with swords and they're just shoot.
[00:09:36] Is that what you're telling me right now?
[00:09:38] Yeah.
[00:09:39] They charge them with swords and they shot.
[00:09:43] There was roughly 800 guys there when they were firing their bullets. to series of these types of clashes of like old ways of doing battle and then either way the colony armies were going to do battle and it was just it just did not work out to the the modern you know it wasn't it's not exactly the birth of modern warfare necessarily but it's like a huge shift on the way fighting is done and the you know just the fact that we have a
[00:12:07] their method of attack was wild out of date like Jack had said and it just did not for the way they wanted and without the British support that was still delayed getting down there there was no hope
[00:12:14] I'm breaking into North Carolina. It was a pretty interesting thing though that for years and years
[00:13:27] Traged more so he was 39 years old at the time when he became a general and at this point and
[00:13:33] He died the very next year from sickness and he didn't get chance to
[00:13:38] Lead another fight because this is the last time North Carolina was attacked But he was believed to be probably their best general because he came up with these
[00:14:46] loyalist army and it was no momentum. So he sailed further to South Carolina. So they're sailing down the coastline. So his plan was to attack Charlestown in South Carolina
[00:14:53] and take it in one fell swoop. This, yeah. So the British attempted to attack and they thought a land invasion by like amphibious assault would work out best. The problem is the area they thought
[00:16:22] they could just like wade up to through the water ships. Mowtree had installed three coastal cannons, and they were able for or something else is that effective greatest military in the world? They seem to just have a very bad planning in execution. Yeah, I suppose so and and then there was a you know, obviously the
[00:19:01] People with colonies were completely used to this well, there's a scout that started to cut you off It kind of shows that they had some great leaders, but then they had a lot of people who were there because they had connections. And that was a big deal then. Like if you had enough money, you could become general. And so some of these landowners that had no idea how to fight were in now in charge. Wow. Yeah, that definitely doesn't make it good general because you have money.
[00:20:23] No, yeah. You know, the Declaration of Independence. You gotta put yourself in their shoes at this point. Now they ask, how do we win this? You know, this is a rough situation, right? You know, in their mindset at this point, they're trying to figure out who's to blame. And so because of that, your... That's the most important part. It is to them at this point anyway.
[00:21:43] Jurgers Clinton and the admiral of those ships, wonder if that was because he was, you know, the general. And so they wanted to maybe maybe give a little bit more blind to him as opposed to the Admiral. Yeah, I think so because for one thing they really needed their Navy to be happy because the Navy was the only thing keeping them in the fight at this point because they've lost
[00:23:00] a lot of guys, a lot of guys who have been captured, they worry out reinforcements for And then hopefully you can reunite with somebody up north because you know anything could happen in New York in this time That they don't know about Also, I'll point out that even though I can't I couldn't find anything specifically with the our old our old buddy Whipple to say he harassed specifically specifically these frigates
[00:24:21] The frigates were often getting harassed by different colony navy
[00:25:21] So he died. Yeah.
[00:25:22] Please tell me somehow that's has to do with the name of McDonald's.
[00:25:25] We can just unofficially say that.
[00:25:27] Just call it.
[00:25:28] Yeah, yes.
[00:25:28] We could say that.
[00:25:29] Yeah.
[00:25:29] I mean, why not?
[00:25:31] So do you have a visual on this guy, Jack?
[00:25:32] He looked like he would be the creator of McDonald's.
[00:25:36] Yeah, we get the keyboard.
[00:25:37] I could not actually find Donald McDonald's a picture of him.
[00:25:42] Seems like a pretty rare name.
[00:25:44] They would be easily.
[00:25:45] Yeah.
[00:25:46] I tried to find him and I couldn't. up to New York hoping to turn the tide up there with some new reinforcements. At this point, it is days away from mercenaries are coming, one of them I guess is technically the headless horsemen. Which is fitting for Halloween. Yeah, I was gonna say it was gonna fit in for Halloween.
[00:28:22] Which is what Luke was trying to do totally.
[00:28:24] Oh yeah, totally.
[00:28:25] I was, I was totally thinking about the fact
[00:28:28] that it's almost Halloween. some boards and like crossbars, kind of like Warborne one trenches. It was kind of like that. Only there was no, they weren't digging down. They were digging up the earth. Yeah, they were mounding it up and then they would put those boards behind it to hold it in place. And then they would put cutouts where you could put your rifle through and then also the cannon barrels. So like the lieutenant whose idea it was really got those people killed. Oh, actually he died on that bridge. I forgot to bring this up. McCloud died on that bridge. And they counted. He was shot by 24 musket balls. Wow. Yeah. So he got he was in the very
[00:31:00] front. He got annihilated. Whoa. Everybody a lot of people very similar looking. But if I were like, just looking at it, I don't know that I could be like, Oh, that's 100% definitely not George Washington. It's just kind of like a very similar portrait style, I guess I could say,
[00:33:24] nods, like Homer nods, just Washington nods about this thing.
[00:33:28] I do believe it would have reached some some point, but he was also preparing to go to the Continental Congress for the,
[00:33:34] yeah, when they were preparing to do the declaration.
[00:33:36] So it was, it would have been like on his mind, but it wouldn't,
[00:33:40] it wasn't like, you know, it was good that happened, but he
[00:33:43] wouldn't know if that like, oh, wow, this is something we didn't
[00:33:46] all be said about the signing of the declaration, but it's just like kind of like perfect timing. We think about it, like when the declaration signing starts to go off and all of a sudden you're kind of surrounded by these pretty big victories.
[00:35:03] It's a good point because if you would have got one in there and got smoked,
[00:36:08] commending Parker and sort of drawing some shade on Clinton for, you know, his failure there by not giving a public commendation, but they didn't have enough time to actually dwell on it because
[00:36:13] of what would happen. So it's kind of an odd sense of like, yes, this was important, but not nearly as
[00:36:22] important as what happened next. But you know, the here at home, they're feeling great though.
[00:37:29] up after this. This was a tremendous boon for the Continental Army. This was a, you know,
[00:37:38] high-profile victories and with fall-bostin three victories, they were able to, you know, tell people this is not going to go away. We're not going to fail for at least a moment. They
[00:37:44] could, say, demonstratively prove that they could beat the British. I wasn't able to find him. Someone's got to be a connection here to McDonald's. I'm damn sure of it. Should be for sure. Well, there's one picture. There's one picture that maybe he maybe this is drawn after he had a little too much McDonald's.
[00:39:02] There's two different portraits and I don't know.
[00:39:04] One he has pants on and one he doesn't.
[00:39:06] Yeah.
[00:40:08] signs like that. Yes. We'll make it up to the Mad Max years. If we make our way to Roswell stories, then we'll definitely have signs on the docket. Just to watch along with signs.
[00:40:16] Yeah, that would be awesome. It would be an awesome Halloween for next year if we get that far.
[00:40:21] So watch along. I haven't watched that movie in so long. I still remember,
