[00:00:09] I'm Greg, the host and curator of True Crime.

[00:00:27] and whatever they're craving.

[00:00:33] case information.

[00:00:35] If you like today's episode, make sure to check out the episode description for links

[00:00:39] to subscribe.

[00:00:40] Alright, let's get this show started.

[00:00:42] Begin.

[00:00:47] We're in the way of being you.

[00:00:59] Do you find yourself wanting to know more about the latest murder, conspiracy, cult,

[00:01:04] or haunting?

[00:01:05] Then this is the podcast for you.

[00:01:07] I'm Alicia.

[00:01:09] And I'm Sierra.

[00:01:10] This is Twisted and Uncorked.

[00:01:13] Hello, and welcome to episode 155.

[00:01:20] Today, I'm telling you all a story based on your chosen special topic of celebrity crimes.

[00:01:29] But as I have already covered a celebrity crime for my most recent episode of an unsolved

[00:01:36] case, I've decided to misunderstand the assignment just slightly.

[00:01:41] Just slightly.

[00:01:42] I'm feeling you're going to go that route.

[00:01:44] We record way in advance, guys.

[00:01:47] And when you voted on that, she was like, God damn it.

[00:01:50] I was literally in the middle of researching the case that I did.

[00:01:53] I think I had just finished the research.

[00:01:55] I was like, I'm not doing this again.

[00:01:58] So yeah, that's how it goes.

[00:01:59] So back it up to 153 if you haven't listened to our OJ episode yet.

[00:02:04] Sierra did a really good job.

[00:02:05] Multiple people reached out and was like, I've heard this story multiple times and you

[00:02:11] did a really good job.

[00:02:12] So.

[00:02:13] Aw, cool.

[00:02:14] But I was so nervous to, I don't know, put salt on the wound, you know?

[00:02:19] You cover the bravest stories of the two of us.

[00:02:23] So, cool to see you.

[00:02:24] You do.

[00:02:25] You really do.

[00:02:26] You did the research for Westman.

[00:02:27] This story, you did this.

[00:02:28] You dig through the me making it up to you is doing serial killer notes because

[00:02:33] that's a whole other dark rabbit hole, which we have next week for you guys.

[00:02:36] But I'm excited to hear what you have for today.

[00:02:40] So this is actually going to be about, I mean, it's still about celebrities who

[00:02:44] have experienced crimes, but today's story is going to revolve around a

[00:02:48] particular house, a haunted house with a shocking connection to not one,

[00:02:55] but two major celebrity deaths before we get started.

[00:03:00] I'm so excited.

[00:03:02] I know that's such a horrible thing to say, but I'm so excited.

[00:03:06] Do you have a fun time for us, Alicia?

[00:03:09] I do.

[00:03:09] I actually, I, Asira does not have a laptop anymore guys, RIP, but on most

[00:03:17] Windows computers on the left hand side, there is a little search button

[00:03:22] that you could search things on your computer or it'll bring up like a

[00:03:25] search for the inner web, inner web.

[00:03:27] Oh my God.

[00:03:28] Internet.

[00:03:29] And every day there's little symbols in the bottom left corner, although

[00:03:36] whatever they want to teach you about.

[00:03:37] And so the other day there was this weird little, and it's like a cartoon version.

[00:03:41] Somebody knows what I'm talking about.

[00:03:43] Like for example today, there's a little mug in the corner.

[00:03:46] And if I click on it, it's like skip the cafe, make your own matcha latte at

[00:03:51] home.

[00:03:52] Well, two days ago it was about something called a sunfish.

[00:03:57] And I'm obsessed.

[00:04:00] They're horrifying because I'm afraid of everything in the ocean, but they

[00:04:05] get there.

[00:04:05] Thank you.

[00:04:06] Because they are super long, like super round and big.

[00:04:12] They're like six feet by six feet around to eight feet.

[00:04:16] And they're almost like flat with like little, little fins.

[00:04:19] Are you Googling a sunfish right now?

[00:04:22] They're kind of terrifying.

[00:04:25] They're kind of horrifying, but they're deep water fish.

[00:04:29] Like everything that they eat is deep water, but they come up to the

[00:04:33] surface and lay on their sides and suntan.

[00:04:37] And I was like, what?

[00:04:39] That's so weird.

[00:04:40] Are you are you seeing a photo of them on their like on the surface of the

[00:04:44] water?

[00:04:45] No, this one.

[00:04:46] Oh God.

[00:04:47] Looks like he's wearing a tutu.

[00:04:51] What are you telling me?

[00:04:53] I wonder if that's a male one.

[00:04:55] I think all the ones I've seen are females, but people often say for being

[00:05:01] dead because they float at the top of the water on their sides and sometimes

[00:05:06] they have their eyes closed.

[00:05:08] They look like they're dead.

[00:05:09] So people are like, oh my God.

[00:05:11] But because they're deep water fish, people don't often see them

[00:05:14] unless they're doing that.

[00:05:15] So that's why they got the term sunfish because they suntan.

[00:05:19] And I thought that was kind of cute.

[00:05:21] And this is coming from somebody that's horrified of everything in the

[00:05:23] water.

[00:05:24] And if you're watching this on YouTube, Sierra's face is horn-mine.

[00:05:28] It's weird.

[00:05:31] I don't like it.

[00:05:32] I don't like it.

[00:05:34] It like doesn't have a tail.

[00:05:36] It just has the weird little tutu thing.

[00:05:39] Yeah.

[00:05:39] And two fins, one on top and one on bottom.

[00:05:41] I know.

[00:05:42] It looks like its legs are outstretched.

[00:05:44] How does it swim?

[00:05:45] You don't like that.

[00:05:46] No.

[00:05:47] They're fucking huge though.

[00:05:49] They're fucking huge.

[00:05:51] Like if you look at them next to a human, I'm like absolutely not.

[00:05:56] Ding!

[00:05:57] Yeah, they're so big.

[00:05:59] Yeah.

[00:06:00] Yeah.

[00:06:01] But what is your fun fact?

[00:06:04] My fun fact is about a sort of celebrity.

[00:06:07] Do you guys have my grush the crime dog in Canada?

[00:06:12] I can't speak for all of Canada because I've been yelled at

[00:06:15] in the past, but it wasn't a big thing for me until I started listening to

[00:06:19] Cedarster Hood.

[00:06:21] Because they are big.

[00:06:22] So Grush the crime dog is like, he was like the dare dog.

[00:06:26] You know what I mean?

[00:06:26] Like he came and talked about drugs and alcohol and guns and stuff like that.

[00:06:31] Right?

[00:06:32] He came to schools.

[00:06:34] The actor because they did like a, you know, I don't know if it was a show,

[00:06:39] but it was like commercials and stuff.

[00:06:41] It was my breast with crime dog.

[00:06:42] The actress named is John Morales.

[00:06:44] I want to do voice McGrush.

[00:06:48] And he has been in jail since 2011 because the least discovered he had a

[00:06:56] thousand marijuana plants, 27 weapons and 9000 rounds ammunition that's house.

[00:07:04] McGrush has not taken his own advice.

[00:07:07] I was going to say the irony in that the investigation.

[00:07:11] Oh my gosh.

[00:07:13] Uh, yeah.

[00:07:14] McGrush's in jail.

[00:07:15] Okay.

[00:07:16] He's a bad dog.

[00:07:21] Oh my God.

[00:07:23] Yeah.

[00:07:23] Yeah.

[00:07:24] Let's start a good luck for a crime dog to have a thousand marijuana plants.

[00:07:31] In 2011 too, like it was not legal.

[00:07:33] Not legal anywhere that at the time.

[00:07:38] Oh my gosh.

[00:07:39] I love it.

[00:07:40] Oh no.

[00:07:41] Um, well,

[00:07:44] sorry, I was going to say that.

[00:07:46] That's why he's telling the kids not to get the drugs and guns because he wants

[00:07:50] him all for himself.

[00:07:52] Horder.

[00:07:54] He's like, he just saved her for me.

[00:07:57] Everything's fine here.

[00:07:58] Nothing to see.

[00:08:00] Or if he like, I've already, I'm already too far deep, save yourselves guys.

[00:08:05] Yeah, maybe.

[00:08:07] I didn't save the link.

[00:08:08] I just screen shot of the information, but I'm pretty sure it said he also

[00:08:11] had like grenades.

[00:08:13] Like for what?

[00:08:14] Because why?

[00:08:17] Whatever.

[00:08:17] That for sir.

[00:08:20] Yeah, right?

[00:08:21] That's gross.

[00:08:22] Oh, like that.

[00:08:23] No, you know what?

[00:08:24] I'm wrong.

[00:08:25] It wasn't even it was grenade launchers.

[00:08:28] Like even more fly.

[00:08:31] Oh sir.

[00:08:33] Yeah.

[00:08:34] I mean, it's maybe a good thing that he's in jail because maybe which

[00:08:38] was he going to do with those grenade launchers?

[00:08:41] Ponder on that.

[00:08:42] Well, you sit on a sangria.

[00:08:45] Perfect.

[00:08:46] By the way, I'm actually not drinking my own sangria recipe.

[00:08:50] And I say that hesitantly because I really wanted it, but I haven't eaten

[00:08:55] dinner yet and that feels irresponsible.

[00:08:57] So I'm drinking a white cloth instead.

[00:08:59] And my cousin is coming here this weekend with her son and it's

[00:09:04] her birthday next week.

[00:09:06] So I thought that it would be a perfect little backyard sipper with her.

[00:09:10] So I will report back on how it tastes.

[00:09:13] But it is a summer sangria, sorry, a summer strawberry sangria.

[00:09:19] And it has strawberries.

[00:09:21] You can put sugar in it.

[00:09:24] You can admit it if you'd like or simple syrup.

[00:09:27] Uh, raspberries, orange slices, orange juice, orange liqueur.

[00:09:33] And if you would like, you can use a rose or a sparkling rose.

[00:09:38] And if you don't have a sparkling rose, you can just hop it with

[00:09:42] a little bit of soda water and it sounds super refreshing, super sweet.

[00:09:47] And I don't know about any of you listeners, but our strawberries

[00:09:52] have been really good lately.

[00:09:54] California's doing it right.

[00:09:55] They're not grown here, let's face it.

[00:09:58] Yeah, they're not growing in my backyard either because they're

[00:10:01] not growing.

[00:10:03] You don't have flowers yet?

[00:10:06] I do.

[00:10:06] I have flowers.

[00:10:07] That's a good thought.

[00:10:08] And little green comes out and then it goes back and then

[00:10:11] shrivels up and I'm like, what's happening?

[00:10:14] I think it might be too hot here all for you to.

[00:10:17] The strawberry comes out.

[00:10:19] That's like, no.

[00:10:21] Yeah, it's like actually just like, you know,

[00:10:23] actually just kidding.

[00:10:24] Oh, I think that changes.

[00:10:27] I can't grow strawberries in my balcony because it's not

[00:10:30] hot enough.

[00:10:31] So yeah, I tried the first year that we lived here and that

[00:10:35] was an epic fail.

[00:10:36] I didn't even get flowers.

[00:10:38] So I believe in you.

[00:10:39] You got this and you mentioned that you are maybe

[00:10:44] drinking something else or do you just have water?

[00:10:46] Yes, I am drinking apple cider vinegar tea, which

[00:10:52] before you shot that guys, it's actually very good.

[00:10:55] It is really good.

[00:10:56] It tastes like apple cider, like warm apple cider kind of.

[00:11:00] Yeah, it really does.

[00:11:00] Like less sugary.

[00:11:02] Yeah, there's it's hot water with apple cider, honey,

[00:11:06] a little bit of lemon juice and cinnamon stick.

[00:11:09] And it's great.

[00:11:10] So and it's great for your gut.

[00:11:12] So and it's supposed to help you fall asleep better.

[00:11:16] So after this, I should be able to go right to sleep

[00:11:19] and not be thinking about books.

[00:11:21] Fall night long.

[00:11:23] We had a little rant before this, but if you want to

[00:11:25] hear about everything that we're reading, you can come

[00:11:29] and check out our Patreon page and follow along with us

[00:11:33] because we are apparently book obsessed.

[00:11:36] I don't get to read as much as Sierra does, which

[00:11:39] makes me sad, but I did recently finish a recommendation

[00:11:44] of hers and it was so good.

[00:11:45] So we are going to talk about that next picture one,

[00:11:47] but for sure we are going to get right into today's story

[00:11:52] after a quick break.

[00:11:54] Be my back.

[00:12:00] Okay, so today's story starts with the purchase of the

[00:12:06] alleged haunted house in July of 1932.

[00:12:12] Oh, she had an old timey case.

[00:12:14] Old timey for now.

[00:12:17] Paul Bern bought a house as a wedding gift for his new

[00:12:21] bride, Jean Harlow.

[00:12:24] Two months later, he'd be found dead inside of that house.

[00:12:30] Paul Bern was born Paul Levy in 1889 in Germany.

[00:12:36] When he was young, he, his parents and five siblings

[00:12:39] moved to New York to escape the rise of anti-Jewish

[00:12:42] views in Germany.

[00:12:43] In New York, he developed a love for acting and

[00:12:46] claimed the stage name Paul Bern.

[00:12:51] While he acted on stage sets for a while, he

[00:12:54] eventually realized that in front of the scene

[00:12:57] wasn't where he belonged.

[00:13:00] Paul wanted to be behind the scenes as a stage

[00:13:03] manager, director or producer.

[00:13:06] He moved to Hollywood in the 1920s and worked

[00:13:09] his way up from film editor to screening

[00:13:12] writer and eventually became a major producer for

[00:13:15] NGM studios.

[00:13:17] Maybe you've heard of it.

[00:13:19] Maybe.

[00:13:20] Jean Harlow was an up-and-coming actress, born

[00:13:23] Harleen Harlow Carpenter in 1911 and known for

[00:13:28] her quote unquote bad girl roles.

[00:13:31] I'm smiling because I know who Jean Harlow is.

[00:13:33] You know me.

[00:13:34] I'm a sucker for old Hollywood women.

[00:13:38] She actually had no interest in the

[00:13:41] no interest in being an actor as a child.

[00:13:44] Her mother Jean Carpenter was the one who moved

[00:13:46] them to Los Angeles so that she, the mother,

[00:13:49] could pursue acting.

[00:13:51] At the age of 32 though, she was having trouble

[00:13:53] finding any gigs.

[00:13:54] They wanted younger actresses.

[00:13:57] She was bullshit.

[00:13:59] Harleen went with a friend to an audition one

[00:14:03] day and caught the eye of some executives.

[00:14:05] They took note of Harleen's beauty and asked

[00:14:08] her to audition.

[00:14:09] Originally she said no, but her friend dared

[00:14:13] her to do it.

[00:14:14] So she did and she put her mother's maiden name

[00:14:19] down as her own Jean Harlow.

[00:14:23] She was a hit.

[00:14:24] They called her back for further auditions

[00:14:26] multiple times and her mother eventually

[00:14:29] talked her into acting.

[00:14:33] In the early 1930s, Harleen, now known

[00:14:36] as Jean Harlow, met Paul Byrne

[00:14:38] and they began a friendship.

[00:14:40] They had a 18-year age difference, but Paul saw

[00:14:45] in Jean a wonderful actress with potential

[00:14:47] to become a star in leading roles.

[00:14:50] Other producers and executives only saw

[00:14:53] a beautiful young blonde and one of her

[00:14:55] specifically for the sexy roles.

[00:14:58] She admired Paul for seeing her potential

[00:15:00] outside of her beauty.

[00:15:02] Just gonna say she was all on bomb shelf,

[00:15:04] I remember correctly.

[00:15:06] Yes.

[00:15:07] He was often described as a short,

[00:15:10] kind of nerdy older man by this point.

[00:15:12] So when Jean took interest in him as a

[00:15:14] romantic partner, many people were shocked.

[00:15:17] They didn't look like they'd be a thick couple.

[00:15:22] But their romance hit hard and fast.

[00:15:24] They started dating in early 1932

[00:15:27] and were married on July 2nd of that same

[00:15:30] year when they moved into their home

[00:15:32] that Paul purchased for Jean.

[00:15:35] But on September 5th, 1932, Paul Byrne was found

[00:15:40] dead in this home with a single gunshot wound

[00:15:43] to his head.

[00:15:43] Officially, his death was ruled a suicide,

[00:15:47] but everything about it is weird and we

[00:15:50] will probably never know for sure.

[00:15:53] Here are the details.

[00:15:56] When he was found by staff of the house,

[00:15:59] Jean was not home.

[00:16:01] She had stayed at her mother's house

[00:16:02] the night before possibly because they

[00:16:05] were having an argument.

[00:16:06] Many reports said that she told him

[00:16:08] she was leaving him.

[00:16:10] The first people that the staff

[00:16:12] and fountain called were the NGM Studio execs,

[00:16:16] not the police.

[00:16:18] And the NGM execs allegedly said they

[00:16:23] could not have a murder investigation

[00:16:25] on their hands because that would

[00:16:27] cause bad press for all the movies

[00:16:28] that were about to come out that

[00:16:30] Jean Harlow was to be starring in.

[00:16:33] Yeah.

[00:16:34] There was a suicide note found in the home, maybe.

[00:16:37] The note said,

[00:16:39] dearest dear, unfortunately this is the only

[00:16:43] way to make good on the frightful wrong

[00:16:45] I have done you and wipe out my abject

[00:16:48] humiliation.

[00:16:49] I love you, Paul.

[00:16:51] You understand that last night it

[00:16:53] was only a comedy.

[00:16:55] However, it was not present when the

[00:16:58] police finally did arrive.

[00:17:01] The execs who were there first gave it to

[00:17:04] the police saying they originally did

[00:17:06] not have that information to be made

[00:17:07] public but decided against keeping it

[00:17:09] from the police.

[00:17:10] Some people claim it's not written in

[00:17:12] policy and writing so maybe the execs

[00:17:14] or even the actual killer if this was

[00:17:17] a murder wrote it to make it look like

[00:17:19] a suicide.

[00:17:20] The story is that Paul was cheating on

[00:17:23] Jean and that's why she was leading

[00:17:26] him and stayed at her mom's and that

[00:17:28] is why he was the one who was

[00:17:30] explaining the suicide note into his

[00:17:33] death.

[00:17:34] It makes sense but then there's another

[00:17:36] weird thing a woman named Dorothy

[00:17:39] Millette died by suicide the very next

[00:17:42] day, September 6th after she jumped

[00:17:46] off a riverboat into the Sacramento

[00:17:48] River at 3 a.m.

[00:17:50] Dorothy Millette was Paul Burns'

[00:17:53] actual legal wife.

[00:17:58] Paul and Dorothy

[00:18:01] stole.

[00:18:02] She married illegally married to Jean.

[00:18:05] Okay, she had a wife like this.

[00:18:07] Sir, also that's so sad but

[00:18:12] you can't just marry two people.

[00:18:13] No, you can't do that.

[00:18:15] Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

[00:18:16] That's a dick move.

[00:18:18] Paul and Dorothy had met many years

[00:18:20] ago when he was living in New York

[00:18:22] and doing stage acting.

[00:18:23] She was also a stage actress.

[00:18:26] They fell in love and married but she

[00:18:28] became

[00:18:30] but she became ill with a mental

[00:18:32] illness and was sent to live in a

[00:18:34] sanatorium in Connecticut.

[00:18:36] Oh god, well look how that goes.

[00:18:39] When Paul moved to Hollywood he

[00:18:41] continued to support Dorothy.

[00:18:43] He sent her the equivalent of 5,000

[00:18:45] in today's money every month

[00:18:47] and wrote her letters about his life

[00:18:49] and his hopes for her to be happy

[00:18:51] but he never spoke about her to

[00:18:53] others.

[00:18:54] It was a secret that he had kept all

[00:18:56] those years.

[00:18:58] According to correspondence with Dorothy

[00:19:00] she was going to be traveling to

[00:19:02] California that night of his death

[00:19:05] and he was going to be paying her way,

[00:19:08] the trip, the hotel she'd stay in, all

[00:19:10] of it.

[00:19:12] Some think that she was the one

[00:19:13] who came to his home and killed him

[00:19:16] and then killed herself.

[00:19:19] Others believe that she killed herself

[00:19:21] because she was sad that he had

[00:19:23] died.

[00:19:25] Sad because she still loved him and

[00:19:27] because she knew that now that he was

[00:19:29] dead she wouldn't have her monthly

[00:19:30] payments and support from him.

[00:19:35] The case was closed as a suicide,

[00:19:37] then reopened 30 years later because

[00:19:39] of rumors that it may be a murder

[00:19:41] but upon looking into the case the

[00:19:43] district attorney at the time said

[00:19:45] that it appears to have only been

[00:19:47] a rumor and there's no new

[00:19:48] information or evidence in the

[00:19:49] case that would lead to a

[00:19:50] different decision

[00:19:52] and so it was closed again.

[00:19:53] So basically like maybe this was a

[00:19:56] murder but at the time they didn't

[00:19:58] have evidence of that whether they

[00:20:01] didn't look for it or just didn't

[00:20:02] have it.

[00:20:03] So there's the possibility.

[00:20:05] Yeah, for sure.

[00:20:07] Five years after Paul Burns death

[00:20:09] Jean Harlow passed away of kidney

[00:20:11] failure at the age of 26.

[00:20:14] So she had contracted scarlet fever

[00:20:17] as a child and the doctors believed

[00:20:19] that this had put a strain on her

[00:20:20] kidneys ever since.

[00:20:22] However, rumors suggest that Paul

[00:20:25] Burns had abused or even slowly

[00:20:27] poisoned Jean while he was alive

[00:20:30] which resulted in her death.

[00:20:32] Other rumors suggest that her mother

[00:20:34] was a Christian scientist who didn't

[00:20:36] believe in surgeries and her illness

[00:20:38] would have been treated and she

[00:20:40] could have survived if they had

[00:20:42] acted sooner and had treatment and

[00:20:45] surgery.

[00:20:47] Either way it was a sad day for

[00:20:48] everyone and at the MGM

[00:20:51] studio the entire company was

[00:20:53] shut down to attend her funeral.

[00:20:57] The saddest part of all of this

[00:21:00] was that Paul was laid to rest in one

[00:21:03] place.

[00:21:04] His illegal wife was laid to rest

[00:21:07] in some other place, Dorothy, so that

[00:21:10] his new wife Jean could eventually be

[00:21:13] laid with him but Jean married again

[00:21:16] after Paul's death.

[00:21:17] That's so she was laid to rest.

[00:21:19] That's great, that's bad energy guys.

[00:21:23] Stop doing this.

[00:21:24] She was laid to rest separate of Paul

[00:21:27] where her new husband would be laid

[00:21:29] but he too remarried before he died

[00:21:33] so he was not laid to rest with Jean.

[00:21:36] All three of these people were

[00:21:38] buried and remained alone.

[00:21:42] Oh no, that could be a reason

[00:21:44] that asked her right there

[00:21:46] why they might decide to visit

[00:21:47] and haunt the last place they were.

[00:21:50] This haunted Benedict Canyon house

[00:21:54] and I know that I just told you about

[00:21:56] three deaths but this was only the

[00:21:58] first instance of a celebrity death

[00:22:00] being related to this house.

[00:22:02] The other happened 30 years later

[00:22:04] in the 1960s.

[00:22:07] In 1963 that same house was bought

[00:22:11] and moved into a bayamon

[00:22:12] who was actually quite intrigued by

[00:22:14] its history.

[00:22:16] His name was Jay Sebring.

[00:22:19] Jay Sebring was born Thomas John Coomer

[00:22:22] in 1933 in Birmingham, Alabama

[00:22:28] but he grew up in Michigan.

[00:22:30] After graduating high school

[00:22:32] he served in the U.S. Navy for four years

[00:22:34] and then moved to Los Angeles

[00:22:35] to attend beauty school

[00:22:37] and became a hairstylist

[00:22:38] and changed his name.

[00:22:40] Jay Sebring became a renowned hairstylist

[00:22:44] changing the way men's hair was cut

[00:22:46] and styled in Hollywood.

[00:22:48] While most starvers were charging

[00:22:51] just a few dollars for men's haircuts

[00:22:53] Jay was able to charge 50 or more

[00:22:55] for the techniques that he knew

[00:22:57] and had clients like Frank Sinatra

[00:22:59] and Sammy Davis Jr.

[00:23:01] who paid them to travel to them.

[00:23:05] When Jay bought this haunted house

[00:23:09] in 1964, 63, I think I just said 63

[00:23:17] and I changed it to 64.

[00:23:18] How does this happen?

[00:23:20] 1963 he had just started a new relationship

[00:23:25] with an actress named Sharon Tate.

[00:23:31] Don't worry, don't worry, don't worry.

[00:23:34] I'm not gonna go that far.

[00:23:36] I mean I am but I'm not.

[00:23:37] I'll get to it.

[00:23:42] Sharon Tate was born in January of 1943 in Texas.

[00:23:47] As a child, she and her family moved around a lot

[00:23:50] and she attended school in multiple cities

[00:23:52] in Texas, Washington and even Italy.

[00:23:56] Her first acting roles were in Italy

[00:23:58] after going to a film set

[00:23:59] and catching the eye of an actor

[00:24:01] and filmmaker George Baymer

[00:24:03] who encouraged her to get into acting herself.

[00:24:06] When she finally moved to Los Angeles in 1962

[00:24:09] she called Richard's agent Richard George.

[00:24:15] I don't know what I'm doing.

[00:24:16] Are you drawing a book?

[00:24:18] No, I was doing this.

[00:24:22] Is one of the character's names?

[00:24:24] No, definitely not.

[00:24:28] Richard was the friend, not George Baymer.

[00:24:31] She called Richard's, what is it called?

[00:24:35] Where am I? Agent

[00:24:37] and he helped her to land a few gigs.

[00:24:39] Okay, this led her to meeting Jay Sebring.

[00:24:43] Okay, is the theme of this episode

[00:24:45] an addition to this house

[00:24:46] blonde bomb shells?

[00:24:48] Because that's another theme I'm seeing here.

[00:24:51] Be right back.

[00:24:57] Sharon and Jay had a great relationship

[00:25:00] but an even stronger friendship.

[00:25:03] At one point Jay did propose to Sharon

[00:25:06] but she declined the marriage proposal

[00:25:08] saying that she intends to retire from acting when she marries

[00:25:11] to give her full attention to a husband

[00:25:13] and she's not ready to do that yet.

[00:25:16] Fair.

[00:25:16] Even after their relationship ended though

[00:25:18] the two remained great close friends.

[00:25:23] Like so close that her new boyfriend in them

[00:25:26] hung out all the time.

[00:25:27] Okay, let's get back to the house.

[00:25:32] In 1968 Sharon was interviewed for a magazine.

[00:25:36] In the interview the host was asking Sharon questions

[00:25:40] one of which was about psychic or supernatural experiences.

[00:25:45] Sharon said that she had a weird dream once

[00:25:48] but it turned out not to be a dream

[00:25:50] and she didn't quite know how to explain it.

[00:25:54] She said she was staying in Jay Sebring's

[00:25:57] Benedict Canyon home

[00:25:59] the one that used to belong to Paul Byrne and Jean Harlow

[00:26:03] when Jay was out of town for work.

[00:26:07] She was in the master bedroom where Paul would have been shot

[00:26:10] and was having a hard time sleeping.

[00:26:13] She said she had a funny feeling that disturbed her

[00:26:16] and so she rolled over and turned on the bedside lamp.

[00:26:19] When the light was turned on she thought she saw something

[00:26:23] or someone moving outside at the bedroom door.

[00:26:27] She couldn't tell if she was awake or dreaming

[00:26:29] but assumed she must have been dreaming.

[00:26:32] She watched the door and saw a strange little man

[00:26:36] enter and start waving all around the room.

[00:26:41] She didn't know what Paul Byrne looks like

[00:26:44] but thought the figure looked like what she had heard him described as

[00:26:49] like Paul Byrne's ghost.

[00:26:54] She said he never tried to approach her

[00:26:55] just walked about the room

[00:26:57] but it stared her enough to jump out of bed

[00:26:59] and run out of the room towards the stairs.

[00:27:04] Then she said again this isn't a fucking interview

[00:27:07] like this is all documented.

[00:27:09] She said quote I saw something or someone tied to the staircase

[00:27:15] whoever it was and I couldn't tell if it was a maiden or a woman

[00:27:19] but knew somehow that it was either Jay Sebring or me

[00:27:25] he or she was cut open at the throat

[00:27:29] end quote.

[00:27:31] Then she said she ran down the stairs to their bar

[00:27:35] and poured herself a drink

[00:27:37] but while down there something kept telling her to pull the wallpaper

[00:27:40] off the wall at the base of the bar so she did

[00:27:45] and then she decided she was definitely dreaming

[00:27:47] because this was just weird

[00:27:49] and she went back upstairs passed the weird creepy thing

[00:27:53] that was tied to the railing

[00:27:54] passed the ghost in the bedroom

[00:27:56] laid down and fell right to sleep.

[00:28:00] She said that she told Jay about the dream

[00:28:02] when she got back from his trip

[00:28:04] and they'd left a weird dream that was also

[00:28:08] just she thought she was over with that pack

[00:28:10] yeah but still I don't like it.

[00:28:15] The two of them laughed about how much

[00:28:17] how weird of a dream that must have been

[00:28:19] but later they noticed that the wallpaper

[00:28:21] at the base of the bar had been pulled up

[00:28:25] she had actually done that part of the supposed dream

[00:28:29] so was the other stuff real?

[00:28:33] This dream happened in 1967

[00:28:37] in 1969 a worse reality was faced by the two

[00:28:44] it didn't feel like the right time to say nice but nice

[00:28:47] by 1969 Sharon and Jay were just friends

[00:28:54] and Sharon was actually dating another man

[00:28:56] Roman Polinsky Polanski

[00:29:01] and was eight months pregnant with this child

[00:29:04] on August 8th 1969

[00:29:07] Roman was out of town for an acting gig

[00:29:09] Sharon was at her home that she shared with Roman

[00:29:12] just up on the street from Jay's Benedict Cairnland home

[00:29:16] with her friends Jay, Vojciak and Abigail

[00:29:21] they had gone out to the desert together

[00:29:23] and then back to Sharon's place

[00:29:26] at about midnight a group of people from a cult group

[00:29:30] came into Sharon's home and began a killing spree

[00:29:35] a friend to the curator of the home

[00:29:37] Steven Parent was shot and peeled outside the house

[00:29:40] Abigail tried to escape the home

[00:29:42] and was stabbed 28 times on the front lawn

[00:29:45] Vojciak was stabbed more than 50 times and shot twice

[00:29:49] and Jay was shot, kicked in the face and stabbed multiple times

[00:29:53] and Sharon was stabbed 16 times before being hung

[00:29:58] from a support beam in the living room

[00:30:01] with her on one end of the rope and Jay on the other

[00:30:06] kind of just like her dream

[00:30:08] I did not know any of that last part

[00:30:12] What?

[00:30:13] That's horrific

[00:30:15] Yeah

[00:30:16] and she had a dream about either her or Jay hanging from a staircase

[00:30:22] She had a premonition that something bad was going to happen

[00:30:26] I'm not going to go much farther into this particular case

[00:30:29] because this is one that needs its own episode or two

[00:30:33] but the culprits were eventually captured and jailed

[00:30:37] the motives they said had nothing to do with the victims

[00:30:40] just with the house they were in

[00:30:42] as it was the former residence of someone they knew

[00:30:47] Sharon Tate, a beautiful blonde talented actress died at the young age of 26

[00:30:56] just like Jean Harlow

[00:30:57] Stop it

[00:30:59] was the 27th quad

[00:31:01] ha ha ha ha

[00:31:02] right?

[00:31:03] was the dream that Sharon had at Jean's old home a premonition

[00:31:08] on what was to come that she couldn't have changed

[00:31:11] was it a warning to do something different

[00:31:13] or was it a curse that was placed on her for simply being in the haunted house

[00:31:20] we'll never know

[00:31:22] We see these like weird curse anomalies in history all the time

[00:31:28] but it's like there's an energy there's a source bigger than we are

[00:31:34] like it can't be explained any other way

[00:31:36] that's super weird

[00:31:38] yeah

[00:31:39] yeah I was researching celebrity crimes

[00:31:42] like what am I gonna do

[00:31:44] and I found Jean Harlow and Paul Byrne

[00:31:46] and I was like okay this is kind of unsoft

[00:31:48] that's interesting

[00:31:49] yeah you and Paul I would too love that

[00:31:53] obviously when you're googling celebrity crimes

[00:31:55] Sharon Tate Sharon Tate

[00:31:56] Sharon Tate

[00:31:57] and I was like I could just buy the bullet and do the big one

[00:32:00] but it's a big one

[00:32:01] and I really don't want to do all that

[00:32:03] and then I saw Jay Sebring owned the house

[00:32:05] the Byrne Harlow house

[00:32:07] and I was like wait a minute

[00:32:08] what these are yeah

[00:32:10] these are connected somehow

[00:32:11] and then I found her interview

[00:32:12] and I was like oh no this is scary

[00:32:17] that's super scary

[00:32:19] yeah I love it

[00:32:22] rapey as shits

[00:32:24] yeah no kidding

[00:32:26] great job

[00:32:27] thank you all

[00:32:28] also um I couldn't find who

[00:32:30] probably because they weren't celebrities or actresses

[00:32:32] but also allegedly like three different people

[00:32:35] have died in the pool at that house

[00:32:37] so like you haunted his fuck

[00:32:40] why would they like burn that house to the ground

[00:32:43] yeah I was trying to figure out if it was um

[00:32:46] if they were gone 26 year olds

[00:32:48] but I don't know who they were

[00:32:49] so that would be insane if they were

[00:32:52] I guess yeah it's not public

[00:32:54] knowledge at that point

[00:32:55] when people mysteriously die in their own homes

[00:32:58] but yeah weird

[00:33:02] I

[00:33:03] like we talk about paranormal stuff all the time

[00:33:06] like paranormal energy can hold on to an object

[00:33:09] or a place or a like just a part of time

[00:33:14] like I just right

[00:33:16] maybe it's time to let this house go Hollywood

[00:33:19] maybe it's time

[00:33:21] I mean I think I thought that they did after

[00:33:24] the best at first but I guess not that wasn't in that house

[00:33:29] right it's down the street right

[00:33:30] right right right right

[00:33:31] on the street

[00:33:32] that's right with that Roman plancky's house

[00:33:34] and they did tear it down

[00:33:36] and rebuild from scratch

[00:33:37] that that okay that's what I was thinking

[00:33:40] but they didn't tear down this house

[00:33:42] that had weird deaths signaled

[00:33:45] God

[00:33:47] oh creeping dreams

[00:33:49] yeah I'm on a tear that bitch down

[00:33:53] mindset right now with our serial killer research

[00:33:56] so I'm just like

[00:33:57] so I'm trying to just just tear it down

[00:34:00] it's just yeah better that way

[00:34:02] it's gotta go

[00:34:04] like the Chris Watts house tear it down

[00:34:06] like just yeah

[00:34:07] stop trying to sell it

[00:34:09] just let it go because this kind of stuff happens

[00:34:14] and that's super weird

[00:34:17] it is

[00:34:17] I'm not weird to you

[00:34:18] I was I was I was thinking

[00:34:20] I was thinking for a second like okay maybe

[00:34:24] maybe the Manson family saw that interview

[00:34:30] and they purposefully made this

[00:34:33] tear it out that way

[00:34:35] yeah

[00:34:35] but and you can't fucking trust the Manson family

[00:34:38] but they are out of shit

[00:34:40] that I don't think they retained anything

[00:34:42] well also they said that they didn't

[00:34:44] plan to kill Sharon Tate specifically

[00:34:47] they planned to kill whoever was in that house

[00:34:49] yeah the motivation was not Sharon Tate

[00:34:51] had nothing to do with it

[00:34:51] that adds yes

[00:34:53] yeah yeah

[00:34:54] that's true

[00:34:55] so but again you can't trust them who knows

[00:34:59] I don't know anybody that's willing to carve

[00:35:01] symbols into their own forehead

[00:35:03] should be listed

[00:35:05] but we will get there at some point

[00:35:07] but great job

[00:35:09] oh my god

[00:35:10] that's a big thank you

[00:35:13] well you know what since we've touched on it

[00:35:15] today listeners let us know

[00:35:17] do we consider the Manson family

[00:35:19] a cult or a serial killer

[00:35:22] because some podcasts have covered it one way

[00:35:25] and some podcasts have covered it another way

[00:35:27] so curious to know what you guys think

[00:35:29] and how we should cover it

[00:35:31] there we go

[00:35:31] yeah

[00:35:32] yeah

[00:35:33] and we read your messages about suggestions

[00:35:37] thank you

[00:35:38] definitely

[00:35:40] um oh I don't even know what to do with myself right now

[00:35:45] I love that's my Roman empire is old Hollywood

[00:35:52] I just love the glam and the glitz of it all

[00:35:54] I love like the 1920s was my favorite era

[00:35:57] I just when I have my own podcast studio

[00:36:03] my goal is to have like a bad ass ladies like

[00:36:09] art wall of like all of Thomas's like model shots

[00:36:14] like a couple of them

[00:36:15] but Mary Ann Monroe because I I think it's cool

[00:36:19] I think that they're people to look up to in some way

[00:36:22] because they paved the way for everybody else coming in now

[00:36:25] right

[00:36:26] also we should never

[00:36:29] word to the wise go back to the 1930s eyebrows

[00:36:34] slash the 1990s eyebrows

[00:36:36] I'll fucking them super thin

[00:36:38] please never do that again

[00:36:40] if anyone is listening to this in a hundred years

[00:36:42] please mark my words

[00:36:43] don't do it

[00:36:44] it's not a good look

[00:36:45] not a good look

[00:36:47] I'm pretty sure that's coming back

[00:36:49] no

[00:36:50] tell the models

[00:36:52] and thank you so much for those of you that do listen

[00:36:56] if you want some more twisted content

[00:36:58] we do have our patreon page

[00:37:00] where we do urban legends and bonus episodes

[00:37:03] and if you want to get to know us better

[00:37:04] bitch and wine

[00:37:06] we read it

[00:37:07] that's a fun stuff

[00:37:08] and I am lacing an order very soon

[00:37:12] for some new goodies

[00:37:13] that you're gonna want to want

[00:37:15] so

[00:37:17] we also would appreciate you leaving us a five star reading review

[00:37:21] it is the best way to spread the word

[00:37:23] especially if you're listening on apple podcasts

[00:37:26] and recently apple podcasts

[00:37:29] not so much recently

[00:37:30] but in the last like eight months

[00:37:32] has released a feature where downloads

[00:37:35] do not count for podcasters

[00:37:38] unless you subscribe to them

[00:37:41] so if you could subscribe

[00:37:43] and follow our podcast

[00:37:45] that would be really really really great

[00:37:48] we would appreciate it

[00:37:49] and uh yeah

[00:37:51] before we roll out of here

[00:37:52] Sierra do you have something exciting going on?

[00:37:55] not specifically just books

[00:37:57] books are exciting

[00:37:59] we've recorded May's bitch and wine already

[00:38:02] was it May?

[00:38:02] yeah

[00:38:03] and in May's bitch and wine

[00:38:05] I didn't get to talk about everything that I read in April

[00:38:06] at the people I finish

[00:38:11] on accident

[00:38:34] I am just super thankful for how smooth this weekend's been really

[00:38:39] I know that that's a weird thing to say

[00:38:41] and I'm gonna knock on wood

[00:38:42] but I feel like I've had a little more

[00:38:46] peace and a little less rushing around

[00:38:48] and that feels nice

[00:38:50] like for example I wrote 11 pages of notes last night

[00:38:53] I don't usually have time to do that in one day

[00:38:55] so things are running smooth

[00:38:58] and I'm happy about it

[00:39:00] very nice

[00:39:00] that means that I'm gonna get to read in the tub tonight

[00:39:03] and wash off my sweaty yoga mist

[00:39:06] we will see you next week

[00:39:08] for our serial killer episode

[00:39:10] that we've been hinting at this whole episode

[00:39:12] and in the meantime
